The Independent is a non-partisan weekly newspaper that originates in Belize City. It is distributed and sold in all the major urban areas of the nation of Belize, as well as the neighbouring border municipalities of Chetumal, Mexico, and Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala, and is available in its entirety to readers across the world via the internet but particularly to subscribers in Canada, the United States of America, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, the United Kingdom, Germany and Taiwan.
Its objective is the provision of coverage of the under-served sectors of the Belizean society, with a particular emphasis on finance, economics and industry, as well arts and culture, entertainment and information technology, as well as fair, balanced and unbiased reporting on the political culture of Belize through professional commentary.
For too long our society has been polarized by our contentious politics. The Independent is intended to give its readers a chance to decide for themselves. You could say that we simply refuse to just curse the dark and prefer instead to light a small candle.
